The Pacific Northwest Node (PNW) of the NIDA Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network (CTN), housed at the University of Washington Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute, welcomes a NIDA Summer Intern to learn about substance abuse treatment clinical research. This 6-week internship will focus on CTN studies active within the PNW node, especially CTN-0082, an implementation survey study to assess Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and opioid-related service availability for men who have sex with men in high- HIV incidence Southeastern US cities. The intern will work with the CTN-0082 lead investigative team based at ADAI. Specific projects might include coding qualitative interviews of directors whose agencies serve those at high HIV risk, and activities around study publications. The intern will gain exposure and experience with addiction clinical research via a variety of experiences such participating on conference calls, conducting literature searches, preparing research materials, and attending webinars and presentations available through the Northwest Addiction Technology Transfer Center (NWATTC), the UW Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), and the UW Department of Psychiatry. Mentoring of skills and interests will be woven throughout the experience. If feasible, activities such as shadowing in the ED, and touring community treatment programs will be included. The intern will be exposed to multiple phases of addiction treatment clinical research via a multidisciplinary perspective, including clinical psychology, emergency medicine, research assistant/research scientist staff, social work, and community treatment providers.

PROJECT NARRATIVE Many individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) do not seek treatment in specialty SUD treatment programs, particularly those in rural settings and those with co-occurring medical and mental health conditions. The integration of SUD treatment into healthcare settings under the ACA-driven healthcare reform requires research to identify, engage, and treat individuals with SUDs more effectively within primary and acute care settings, using electronic medical records to identify individuals at risk and utilizing novel treatment and technology approaches to address their substance use disorders
