Parent Award Identifier: 1R01GM133198
Parent Award Title: PDB Management by the Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics
Parent Award Principal Investigator: Stephen K. Burley, M.D., D.Phil.
Supplement Request: Containerization of RCSB PDB Backend Services for RCSB.org
Project Summary/Abstract:
In its role as a core NIH data repository, the Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics Protein Data
Bank (RCSB PDB) is committed to the best practices articulated by the FAIR and TRUST principles. Established
in 1971 as the first open-access digital data repository in biology, the PDB has been a leading exemplar of FAIR.
RCSB PDB was also an early adopter in securing CoreTrustSeal certification and advocating for the TRUST
principles. In this supplement, we are requesting funding to containerize RCSB PDB Backend Services for
RCSB.org to improve user access with scalability of these services using Docker Containers and Kubernetes
Orchestration hosted on RCSB PDB-owned on premises hardware.

Project Narrative:
In its role as a core NIH data repository, the Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics Protein Data
Bank (RCSB PDB) is committed to the best practices articulated by the FAIR and TRUST principles. This project
will extend further RCSB PDB support of the FAIR principles by containerizing RCSB PDB Backend Services for
RCSB.org to improve user access with scalability of these services using Docker Containers and Kubernetes
Orchestration hosted on RCSB PDB-owned on premises hardware.

Publications
Publications are associated with projects, but cannot be identified with any particular year of the project or fiscal year of funding. This is due to the continuous and cumulative nature of knowledge generation across the life of a project and the sometimes long and variable publishing timeline. Similarly, for multi-component projects, publications are associated with the parent core project and not with individual sub-projects.
