Accomplishments of the AVB Lab this year included: 1) Post-baccalaureate fellow’s poster on future lab directions focusing on inclusivity and accessibility of virtual reality programs and functions; 2) Publication of a paper on usability of an immersive virtual realist grocery store [Flash S, Goldsmith DM, Nelson TL, Thompson W, & Brennan PF. (2024). Assessing the usability of an immersive virtual reality grocery store in healthy controls. International Journal of Medical Informatics, 187, 105458.]; and 3) Orderly wrap-up and shutdown of the lab following the PI’s retirement. Lab staff continued to contribute to science at NINR and other institutes. Staff scientist worked on clinical data science projects including electronic data extraction from EHR to aid eCRF abstraction, using LLMs to identify and report irAEs and generate a consent form from a research protocol, and SmartB3 – processing and gaining insights from Apple device data as part of a feasibility study. A post-baccalaureate fellow gained research experience focused on cancer survivors such as processing biological samples, contributing to papers on gene and cytokine expression profiles related to general pain as well as effects of cancer treatments on physical activity, helping to launch a collaborative study involving functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of brain activity and fatigue experiences, and facilitating an interactive pain lecture series. And another post-baccalaureate fellow contributed to science in the Brain and Cognition Laboratory.
